On the Distribution of Low-Weight Codewords for Turbo Codes

چکیده
We determine the generating function counting the asymptotic number of (minimal) codewords of low weight for standard parallel concatenated (turbo) code ensembles. We then show that the number of minimal codewords of weight up to some fixed constant follows in the limit of large block lengths a Poisson distribution. In analogy to the standard random graph model, we conjecture that this statement remains true as long as we look at codewords of weight O((logn)), where n is the blocklength. We then show that parallel concatenated turbo code ensembles have the same error-floor behavior as standard low-density parity-check ensembles LDPC(n,λ,ρ) with λ′(0)ρ′(1) > 1. Using this analogy we conjecture a compact form of the stability condition for parallel concatenated turbo code ensembles. This condition agrees with the few examples known in the literature. It has the pleasing interpretation to characterize that channel value at which the union bound applied to the asymptotic error floor expression diverges.

Interleaver Design for Turbo Codes with Identical and Non-Identical Constituent Codes
The interleaver plays a key role in determining the turbo code error performance. The proper interleaver design should increase the minimum Hamming distance of the code and decrease the number of codewords with low Hamming weight. When a pseudo-random interleaver is used, the class of low-weight self-terminating (ST) input sequences is most likely to produce low-weight codewords. This paper dis...
متن کاملStudy of Turbo Codes and Decoding in Binary Erasure Channel Based on Stopping Set Analysis
In this paper, we define a stopping set of turbo codes with the iterative decoding in the binary erasure channel. Based on the stopping set analysis, we study the block and bit erasure probabilities of turbo codes and the performance degradation of the iterative decoding against the maximum-likelihood decoding. The error floor performance of turbo codes with the iterative decoding is dominated ...
متن کاملOn the Design of Turbo Codes
In this article, we design new turbo codes that can achieve near-Shannon-limit performance. The design criterion for random interleavers is based on maximizing the effective free distance of the turbo code, i.e., the minimum output weight of codewords due to weight-2 input sequences. An upper bound on the effective free distance of a turbo code is derived. This upper bound can be achieved if th...
متن کاملAnalysis of the Asymptotic Performance of Turbo Codes
Battail [1989] shows that an appropriate criterion for the design of long block codes is the closeness of the normalized weight distribution to Gaussian. A subsequent work by Biglieri and Volski [1994] shows that iterated product of single parity check codes satisfies this criterion. Motivated by these works, in the current article, we study the performance of turbo codes for large block length...
متن کاملA distance spectrum interpretation of turbo codes
The performance of Turbo codes is addressed by examining the code’s distance spectrum. The ‘error floor’ that occurs at moderate signal-to-noise ratios is shown to be a consequence of the relatively low free distance of the code. It is also shown that the ‘error floor’ can be lowered by increasing the size of the interleaver without changing the free distance of the code. Alternatively, the fre...
